Martial Arts and Me

“Train hard, fight easy” used to be the motto of many judokas, but some jiu jitsu practitioners have taken it a stage further drawing from Thucydides: “The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools”.

Andrew has enjoyed and learned from martial arts throughout his life, achieving a black belt in judo, representing Scotland at University level and winning a Home Counties event.  He also featured in the British Open, and was part of a South of England judo team that contested a team from Belgium.

Andrew did his club judo under 7th Dan Don Werner in Bracknell, then 9th Dan Tony Sweeney at the Budokwai Club in London where he interacted with a number of Olympians and World Champions learning a lot from them.

He then went on to practice Shotakan Karate, reaching Purple Belt level, and more recently has graded in Wing Chun and trains albeit more tentatively in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
